All the news on the swine flu is worrying me. Yes, we can do our best to avoid crowded places and keep clean but all that thought about a pandemic has been weighing heavily on me. I feel particularly uneasy being here in Indonesia because if anything breaks out here, I doubt the authorities would be effective in putting any plans into action. As it is, there has been so little awareness or action taken on the dangers of the bird flu here and that virus has already been making its rounds around Indonesia.
Anyway, I don't want to dwell on this. A few days ago, Tanya tagged me for a meme that aims to hear from blogging mothers around the world. Something like "around the world in 80 clicks". I checked back to the blog where this originated and it has surpassed 80 already but is still going on.
The meme is to share the 5 things you love about being a mother. So, here are mine...
1) Getting cuddles, kisses and "I love you's" out of the blue and for no reason.
2) Being able to fix (almost) everything with a smile and a laugh. Life is still so simple for Aaron. Even if I send him for a time-out, he doesn't hold a grudge and all is forgotten once I smile at him.
3) Watching his purity. Aaron is all honesty and sincerity at the moment. He doesn't know anything about wearing masks. When he's happy (which is everyday), he can't contain it. Sometimes, even watching his sadness is amazing because it is so raw.
4) Introducing Aaron to new food. I love eating and am fairly adventurous. Aaron is also turning out to be quite the food lover. He's willing to try anything I'm eating and often ends up liking it too.
5) Watching him imitate us. Almost everyday, we get a funny moment when we see him either repeating something we have said or imitating something that we do. I know there will be the inevitable embarrassing moment but 90% of it is good stuff at the moment.
I usually don't tag anybody when I do memes but I thought I would pass this along to at least one other person to help this move around the world. So, I'm tagging my dear friend, Kelly, in Malaysia. Her blog is actually in Chinese, so it will be interesting to see where the meme goes from here.

The High School Meme
I got this meme from Bilbo's blog. High school certainly was a long time ago! Looking back, I neither enjoyed nor hated high school. Its just something that had to be done. I went to All Hallows' School in Brisbane.
1. Did you date someone from your high school? – No. I went to an all girl's school.
2. Did you marry someone from your high school? – No. I married someone from the office instead.
3. Did you car pool to School? – No. I don't remember anybody driving to school. I took the 7.28am train each morning. Students had a train pass that allowed free travel from the suburb you lived in to the suburb your school was in.
4. What kind of car did you have? – No car until my first year at university. It was a yellow mitsubishi station wagon with no power steering.
5. It is Friday night then; where are you? – At home reading or watching TV.
6. It is Friday night now, where are you? – At home reading or watching TV. Oop! Something needs to be done about this! I am comforted that after high school and before motherhood, I did do other things on a Friday night....
7. What kind of job did you have in high school? – On weekends, my brother and I cleaned the office areas and bathrooms at the warehouse my mother managed.
8. Were you a party animal? – Not at all.
9. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir? – I played the violin in the school orchestra. Also, I took music as a subject in Grade 11 and 12 and our class regularly entered choir competitions. We won a few and had a lot of fun.
10. Were you a nerd? – Not really. I think I was right in the middle of the nerd to rebel spectrum.
11. Did you get suspended or expelled? – Nope. I never even went to detention. The worst I ever got in my entire school life was a light whack on the bum with a cane. This was back in primary school in Malaysia.
12. Can you sing the school song? – Yes and I really like the melody. Just don't ask me what it means because its in Latin. Angeli, archangeli.....angels?
Hmmm...Its been 17 years since high school and only now do I find out, after Googling, that the school anthem was not an original for the school. Its some sacred motet from the 1500s.
13. Who was your favorite teacher? – I don't have one. None really made an impression on me.
14. Where did you sit during lunch? – We had a canteen (called tuckshop in Australia) to buy food but no designated area for eating. There were benches around the school and lots of grassy spots. One of the regular lunch spots I remember is the walkway joining the convent to the main part of the school. Its the area under that long red roof in this link.
15. When did you graduate? – November, 1992.
16. What was your school mascot? – I don't think we had one.
17. If you could go back and do it again - what would you do?
Lots...
a) Don't pick German or History in Grades 9 and 10
b) Learn the cello instead of the violin
c) Understand instead of memorize
d) Pick some of the business subjects
e) Mingle more. I tended to have one group of friends for lunch. One for orchestra. One for classes. Etc, etc, etc... I wish it was more free flowing.
18. Did you go to the Prom? – Yes, except its called the school Formal in Brisbane. All I remember is an embarrassing moment when my heel got caught in the bottom bar of a stool when I stood up (yes I'm a klutz) and I nearly went splat! Unfortunately, no knight in shining armour rescued me, just my girlfriends.
19. Do you still talk to the person you went to the prom with? – No. I honestly can't remember his name.
20. Do you still talk to people from your school? – Up until November of 2008, I have been in constant contact with only one of my friends. But now, thanks to Facebook, I have found many many many more of them. Still looking for one particular girl. (If your name is V. Wu and you graduated from All Hallows in 1992, leave me a message!)
Alright, its your turn.

What else would I have?
There really are so many memes about these days. I enjoy doing most of them and definitely love reading what other people have to say. Sometimes I find them helpful too when I don't have time to do a 'real' post. Like today. Aaron has had something irritating his stomach since yesterday and I've been changing diapers too many times to count. Overall, he's still the same active, happy toddler so its nothing serious. He probably ate some seaweed from that trip to Wynnum or perhaps he chewed on his shoes one too many times.
Here is a meme that Serina tagged me for. Its to show what my desktop looks like. Unfortunately, I'm using my mother's computer while I'm here in Brisbane but my own desktop isn't much different. Aaron is like the center of EVERYTHING at the moment.

I like being tagged for memes but I usually don't tag anybody else and just leave it up to any other readers to do if they feel like it. Somehow, 'forwarding' doesn't come naturally to me. I also don't forward chain emails so I guess I'm consistent.

This is how annoying I am
Here is an interesting meme that I got from Jean. Its all about my annoying habits. All of them are about how I annoy my husband. Not on purpose but because he is the person I am most comfortable with.
1. Lately, I HAVE to finish a post for my blog before sitting down for a DVD. Sometimes, I keep Richard waiting and then get lost in the internet until its too late to start a DVD.
2. I like to mute the volume during the eerie or suspense sequences in thriller movies. Its amazing how quickly my heartbeat returns to normal once there is no audio accompanying the visual.
3. I'm lazy and often ask Richard to pass me something or get me a drink after I have gotten into bed. The problem is, I never remember to ask this until he has settled himself into bed already.
4. I don't like carrying a handbag so whenever we go out, I get Richard to carry my purse and cell phone.
5. When I feel like indulging in some Indomie (Indonesian instant noodles) at 10pm, I INSIST that Richard join me. I just don't want to be the only one doing something so unhealthy.
6. I find it impossible to sit still. No matter where or what I am sitting on, I'm never comfortable. I change positions almost every minute. The worst is when I am out in a cinema watching a long movie. Cross my legs, straighten them, put them up, tuck them under, fold my arms, put one arm behind, lean left, lean right and so on.
OK. Thats all I can think of. I'm sure I have other annoying habits that I don't realise but it was quite difficult just to put those six up. Perhaps the final annoying habit is that I probably won't admit to whatever annoying habit somebody else may point out to me.

A Meme about Me
I love finding out more about the people behind the blogs I read. Yesterday, Serina at Laughter, Love and Madness: The Life We Have tagged me for a meme to whare some interesting facts about myself. I found this a little hard to do because these days, I find that my life revolves so much around Aaron's routine that there is nothing interesting left in me. So, here are some facts about me:
1. I don't like sleeping in. This is the way I've been my whole life. When I was in school, I didn't want to waste precious weekend time by sleeping them away. When I had a job, and worked 15 hour days, I found even more reason NOT to sleep in. What would life be if I just worked and slept. These days, with the baby, there is of course no time to sleep in but still, I don't yearn for it. If he's up at 5am....lets start the day.
2. I can eat A LOT. Seriously. I can eat more than my husband. Its not that I'm always stuffing myself with food but when the occasion calls for it, I can really eat and enjoy every mouthful of it.
3. I'm paranoid about losing my teeth. It was terrible during the 9 months of pregnancy and I visited the dentist about 4 times. Two 'official' visits and two turn-up-and-beg-for-consultation visits because I had imagined cavities. I still imagine problems with my teeth but I try not to go running to the dentist all the time.....I think I'll be needing a root canal soon...
4. I'm constantly worried that I will spoil Aaron. There is always so much 'advice' out there about not giving in, reprimanding, not to always carry a child etc etc etc. And there are also so many books out there about how to gently discipline (or teach as John had once explained. In the end, I say to myself that motherhood is a journey and I will learn as we travel together.
5. I'm a little self conscious about the way I walk. I think my feet somehow swing out and then in again....making me look like a cartoon character. And I have a tendency to lead with my head....making me look like a tortoise.

My favourite day - Christmas Eve
I saw this meme at Table for Five and I'm in need of something light and happy to post about after a rollercoaster day so, here it is. Christmas Eve really is my favourite day of the year. I like the anticipation of Christmas but the day itself always seems anti climatic because of all my anticipation. Anyway...
What is your favorite Christmas gift?
I'm hard to shop for. So, nothing in particular. What makes me happy are the gifts from my husband that come with thought and preparation. Doesn't matter what the gift actually is.
What is your best memory of Christmas?
Christmas carolling in Ipoh, Malaysia around 1988. I was in the church choir and we went from house to house in an old school bus overloaded with happy, laughing friends. It was the only time of the year that I was allowed out until past midnight.
Depending on where you live, do you have a hot or cold Christmas?
I've spent 28 in Malaysia (hot), 1 in Australia (hot) and 1 in Switzerland (cold but disappointingly, not white).
Would you prefer to try the opposite weather at least just once?
I am still waiting for a White Christmas. Songs are sung about it, movies always show Christmas with snow....Yes, I'm easily influenced but I really must give it a go.
What do you prefer in a tree? Fake or real?
Never had a real one but I think I'd prefer a fake one. It just seems very messy to have a real one.
What is your favorite Christmas Carol?
Maybe O Holy Night. I can't pick just one because I like them all. REALLY. I wait all year to listen to them. I start listening from around October because I feel that listening only in December is too short a duration.
What is your favorite Christmas Dinner?
Christmas is a time for family get togethers. Chinese New Year is also that kind of time. The get togethers are always in my grandmother's house and she has a set reunion menu (aka CNY food). Rice with the following dishes: warm cuttlefish salad, slow cooked pigs tails with beanpaste sauce, roast pork chinese style, omellette with carrots, cabbage and pork (this one is actually named after me) and some stir fried vegetables.
Do you wear a Santa Hat at Christmas?
Nope. Its too HOT!
Have you ever seen Santa delivering your gifts?
No. And I can't even remember when he stopped coming.....did I stop believing?
How does Santa get to all those houses in just one night?
He must use a transporter.
Come on people. Do this meme! Get into the spirit of Christmas early this year!

I got this fun meme from 3 Wild Monkeys. I'm tagging anybody who feels like having some fun.
1) Go to Google. 2) Click on Google images. 3) Type in your name and search. 4) The original meme was for people who shared your name but I chose to do mine on things I didn't know my name was associated with. Anyway, post your images and leave a link back here. 5) Pass it on.

If You Could Only...You Would...
Life always has it's ups and downs and is sometimes disappointing, but on we dream and wish, "if I could only"..~Toni ©~
1. If you could only choose any place on earth to live..you would?:
Somewhere that snows at least part of the year. I have never been there but I have always liked the sound of Colorado Springs. Don't ask me why! Its just a daydream...
2. If you could only buy anything you ever wanted..you would:
A Steinway Grand Piano
3. If you could only do whatever your heart desires..you would?:
I think I am already doing what my heart desires...
4. If you could only write a great novel about (any genre)...you would:
It would probably be on my mother's childhood in 1950s Malaysia. Her dad was an assistant mining inspector and was tranferred from town to town. When she started primary school, she was sent to live with a lady that she hardly knew.

Meme
This is my new word of the day. When I initially came across it, I thought it read MI MI. Its actually pronounced like the 'mem' from memory or supposedly sometimes it rhymes with dream.
Its original meaning is something along the lines of 'chinese whispers' where one person's post on their blog is written about by somebody else and then again but yet another person. Get it?
Now, there are websites out there that create daily, weekly or monthly questions/ideas/topics (called the memes) and post them for other people to go write about. Sometimes it is suggested that you get several of your friends to write about the same meme. And then, each of them goes and gets several other people. ETC ETC ETC
The Daily Meme is an interesting place to start. I think I'll give it a go one of these days.

Now, there are websites out there that create daily, weekly or monthly questions/ideas/topics (called the memes) and post them for other people to go write about. Sometimes it is suggested that you get several of your friends to write about the same meme. And then, each of them goes and gets several other people. ETC ETC ETC
