Fun Monday - Whats in a name and on my plate?

This week's Fun Monday is hosted by Mariposa's Tales:

(1) Please share to us how the NAME of your BLOG was made? I can't wait to hear interesting funny stories!

(2) Please share to us (in words or photo, though a combination of both will be a bonus!) your favorite/ most common dish!

1) I started blogging at the start of 2007 when I was breastfeeding Aaron every 1.5-2hrs (even through the night). I had a few people call me a cow but I didn't think that was a very attractive blog name so. 'The Milk Bar' sounded much more refreshing.

2) I don't think I have just one favorite dish. I like all sorts of food and must have tens of favorites. The one that I'll pick to blog about today is 'Laksa Lemak' because I happen to have an archived photo of it. Not the best photo but trust me, this was DELICIOUS!

Laksa refers to a type of soupy noodle that comes in many variations. They are often sourish and spicy - incredibly appetizing. But those aren't my favorite. The one that I like best is the Nyonya version of it cooked in a coconut milk broth infused with pounded lemon grass, kefir lime leaves, coriander, chillis, onions, garlic, tumeric root and galangal. The main food in it is the fish but I usually just use canned tuna for convenience. I'm not that into fish and its really the taste of all those spices that I love. Finally, it is garnished with ginger flower, cucumber, lettuce, bit of lime and prawn paste. Like the other laksas, it is fragrant and spicy, but not sour. Instead, the coconut milk makes it rich and creamy.

It never occured to me that's the story behind The Milk Bar... :D

My Choice of blog name was pretty uninspired...Bilbo is my long-time nickname (and the name of a fictional character I liked from The Lord of the Rings), and I think you'll agree that my posts are, in fact, pretty random. So, "Bilbo's Random Thought Collection" was a sort of easy cop-out. My favorite dish is, without doubt, Corned Beef and Cabbage. But the corned beef has to be baked, not boiled, and the cabbage has to be made like Agnes makes it - cut in thin strips and cooked with bacon fat, onions, and wine. Drat...now I'm hungry, and it's still three hours to lunch...

I thought that "Out of My Hat" was a likely name for a blog featuring the random thoughts and expressions of a magician.

As for a favorite dish...too many to choose from. I often tell people, "You don't get to be this size by being a picky eater!"

Can we make that soup with Tofu? The ingredients (other than the fish) really sounds delightful.

Now there is one of those blog names that you grow out of -- but it is very funny now. Those 1 1/2 hour feedings surely wore you out then.

I had the same nickname when my kids were little but because I had 4 kids in 5 1/2 years and nursed them all mostly till they were 2. So I spent 7 years nursing!
That looks like a yummy dish!

I started on April 30th 2005. As I was writing the diary of Captain Picard, 'Captain Picard's Journal' was entirely logical.

The milk bar - that is too cute, and definitely much better than cow!

Now that we know about the background of the title, it's very appropriate.

Well you certainly are a woman who can multi-task! Feed the baby, come up with a cool blog name and write it as well!

Appreciate your different recipe ideas--love lemongrass--which we can now buy fresh--and coconut milk for it's creamy richness.

Ooh, those noodles sound amazing. Do you have to use fish? or maybe some shredded chicken or pork?

Hmmmm.

What a cool name.

And yummy looking recipe.

Our friend just arrived back here after spending 2 years living in Indonesia. He experienced some "challenges" also.

I thought milk bar was maybe for a chocolate bar but 'your' milk bar story is much better. Love it! And the dish does look pretty good.

That dish sounds very interesting. I don't know what quite a few of those ingredients are even. I'd love to try it, but I'll have to just make a small amount since most of my family doesn't like trying things that are too new or different. They don't know what they're missing!
